Let's discover how a partnership with a lamination system manufacturer, a PCB producer and a fiber-based material producer lead to an innovative and sustainable release aid.

Subjects: Materials processing | Production materials/equipment and environmental technology

Speaker: Clothilde Manzano

Type: Lecture

Speech: English

As part of its continued focus on global sustainability leadership and from Plastic to Purpose’ campaign, Ahlstrom-Munksjö has developed its innovative process aid for Printed Circuit Board (PCB) and Copper Clad Laminates (CCL) laminating systems.
In close collaboration with various stakeholders of the value chain in this market: Lauffer Pressen, one of the world's leading manufacturers of laminating systems and Atlantec (ACB group), specialist in the production of prototypes and small series PCBs , we harnessed our expertise in natural fibers and parchmentization to create a new kind of lamination processing aid that rises to the sustainable challenges of the PCB and CCL pressing industry.
Consumable release sheets are an important aid for many demanding lamination processes including CCL or PCB pressing. Today, the release sheet market is exclusively composed of plastic films which are not environmentally sustainable. In addition, standard plastic films become brittle and difficult to manipulate at temperatures above 200°C; a temperature often required for the PCB and CCL pressing process. OptiLayup™ is a disruptive innovation, finally bringing a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic products used during the lamination process with more functional performance and at a lower cost. This 100% cellulose composite protects both press tools and laminates with its superior release. OptiLayup™ is produced from responsibly sourced and renewable wood pulp, certified according to FSC® standards by Forest Stewardship Council® and is biodegradable & compostable. Additional features include higher temperature resistance, cost-reduction and low static coefficient

This technical paper will detail the different tests and methodologies developed together with Lauffer Pressen and Atlantec to ensure the performance of OptiLayup™ for the pressing of highly technical PCB components; including pressure and temperature test qualification with several types of base materials in a vacuum press but also the final performance check with visual inspection and mandatory quality control of the final PCB.
Ultimately, each step of the IPC-ClassII Rigid PCB making was evaluated and benchmarked by Atlantec to make sure OptiLayup™ delivers the same protection and performance as the current PE release film.
