Part of the session: Sustainable Applications of Printed Electronics
Climate change continues to dominate the headlines, and developed countries have set themselves challenging goals to create more circular economies and reduce waste. One initiative, Extended Producer Responsibility, places demands on the whole value chain – packaging producers, brand owners and retailers, to ensure that they can recover and reuse or recycle the valuable materials that they use. How successful they are at recapturing the materials will directly affect their profitability, so they are all very motivated to do so, but most are struggling to identify practical and low-cost solutions.
Embedding electronics into packaging offers several ways to aid reuse and recycling, some of which are currently being used in pilot trials. But silicon-based circuits have several limitations, in this session we explain how novel flexible and hybrid electronics provide more optimized designs and why they their carbon footprint is much lower than traditional silicon.
